XWP Stories - S

Sad One, The by Verrath
Recommended by: Valkyrie - 07.06.03
Classification: Classic/Post-FIN
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story - 14 pages - Complete

This haunting story is set fifteen years to the day after Xena’s ghost disappeared from Gabrielle’s life. Gabrielle, sad and bitter, has retired from adventuring and fighting for the greater good. Settling for a time in a remote Egyptian village, she has earned fame, but not found peace, except for a self-imposed emptiness, or “Calm,” that enables her to keep her precarious sanity. The story begins with an old man coming to Gabrielle for help. His granddaughter, Nakht (meaning Strong One), has run away. He asks Gabrielle to find her. Apparently Nakht has long admired Gabrielle, and he believes that the girl may have left to find her. Gabrielle is indifferent, even when she hears that this is the girl’s 15th birthday. Even this “aha!” moment is not enough to raise Gabrielle’s spirits. She’s been disappointed before; has learned not to hope, and Verrath’s writing is such that the reader is afraid to hope as well. That is part of the power of this story. The next day Gabrielle decides to leave, riding a camel named Fate. She lets Fate lead her where she will, aimlessly wandering the desert with no particular destination in mind. It is not surprising that she eventually meets the gangly runaway girl, but I will not spoil the story by revealing the circumstances. I found this story to be almost painful in its portrayal of Gabrielle. It was painful, but also so real that the ending left me in tears. That doesn’t happen to me very often. Verrath is a genius for giving Gabrielle a rebirth in Hamunaptra, fabled City of the Dead. And she does a marvelous job of showing how “everything happens precisely as it should.”

I’m not a big fan of FIN or post-FIN stories. Of the hundreds upon hundreds of stories I have edited, or the dozens I have reviewed, only a very select handful are of this subject. But Verrath has always been an exception to most rules. Her writing has always been admirable, widely varied in tone and subject, and this piece is a good example of that. It begins fifteen years after Xena broke her final promise to Gabrielle, the one that went, ‘Even in death Gabrielle…’ Alone with her anger, resentment and loss, Gabrielle manages to find sleep through intensive meditation and has become the warrior she once so admired. One that is hard, filled with regret, and wishes for death. Then she is faced with a challenge, one she does not know if she wants to take anymore. As you can guess, this begins as a somewhat somber tale, and one that does not rely on a solution where Gabrielle wakes from a dream or somehow returns to change the past. If I had any criticisms, I might say that the resolution is not entirely unexpected, but as it is complemented by excellent writing and storytelling throughout, one that is quite satisfying.

While there are a lot of Callisto stories out there, few of them make you laugh. This one will, in spades. Set vaguely in the second season, this story has Callisto finding Gabrielle in the marketplace. Rather than taking vengeance, Callisto decides to be far crueler, and helps Gabrielle shop. The resulting chaos, as well as a showdown between Xena and Callisto (over Gabrielle, of course), is a delight to read. This is one of those stories that will have you dreaming it was an episode!

Autumn Winds - Part One of "(The) Seasons Series" by Anne Azel

Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Novella - complete

The author's special note on "The Seasons Series" reads, "This four part series deals with the quiet sort of courage that it takes to be female and/or gay in today's world." In the first of her series, Anne Azel delivers exactly what she has promised.

Robbie, an actor/director/playwright, attends her brother's funeral and is taken off-guard when she discovers that she has a sister-in-law and a niece. Since Robbie is the head of her prominent family, she takes it upon herself to make a good impression for the media in regards to the unexpected additions to her family. In doing so, Robbie soon imposes on Janet (her new sister-in-law) and Rebecca's (her niece) tranquil lives. With Janet being the principal at The Bartlett School for the Gifted, and Robbie being a "rude, overbearing, egocentric workaholic," their differing temperaments are staunchly evident and the relationship with the new in-laws is not off to a good start. But when Janet needs support and a friend, Robbie is the first one Janet turns to, and the first one there for her. This is a story of a budding romantic relationship filled with courage, dignity, love, and friendship. This is a very enjoyable story that will take you through a range of emotions.

All is not well with our couple in the second part of "The Season Series". The story starts off with Janet and Robbie dealing with the aftermath of Janet's breast surgery while they still try to keep on top of their careers. When Janet finally decides to try and break the barriers down that has built up between Robbie and herself over the last months, Robbie suddenly leaves Janet with no explanation. Unbeknownst to Janet, Robbie's departure has to do with a secret from her past that she has harbored for years. Once the secret is revealed, Janet and Robbie can start to build their family. Robbie, who has never really had a sense of family, begins to realize what having one means, as well as the responsibility that goes along with it.

Anne Azel takes us through the story by addressing serious subjects while dealing with them in sensitive, compassionate and entertaining ways. She shows us how these women overcome obstacles while keeping intact their ability to be human and female. This is an enjoyable story that will be having you pondering what could possibly be in the next part of this series.

The Seduction Of Laura by S Anne Gardner
Recommended by: Lariel - June/July 2001
Classification: Uber(ish)
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Complete

Not your typical uber by any means - in fact, it probably doesn't even qualify as one, but it's a damn fine read nevertheless, especially if you like them dark, disturbing and psychologically taut. What starts out as a "they meet on a desert island when shipwrecked" tale soon becomes something much more, as real life forces drastic action and desperate measures to ensure that Laura and Charlie's relationship sustains. And halfway through this story, you'll suddenly realise that what you thought was a romantic love story has gone off the rails somewhere and you're reading something much different...

I can't give the plot away. But I can tell you that you'll find this story compelling, shocking and extremely disturbing. Don't read it if you like the sugar and hearts type of story, but if you like a bit more bite to your fiction, go for it.

Several Devils by ROCFanKat

"Several Devils" has to be one of the most original, funny and just plain entertaining stories I've read in a while. Perhaps the Xenaverse's first black comedy, "Devils" is the story of Devlin Kerry, the "assistant creative director in charge of sex" for J/J/G Advertising. Despite her knack for creating risque and controversial ads, Devvy is having second thoughts about her career in advertising -- or "telling lies for a living," as she puts it. At the center of her unease is a growing resentment for a job in which sex is used to sell everything.

Professionally, Devvy's problem manifests itself in a creative block. Personally, it appears in the form of Monica, a beautiful raven-haired demon with a penchant for wearing black lingerie and showing up at all the wrong places. With sharp humor (and even sharper fangs), Monica is about to drag Devvy from the proverbial closet and force her to face her deepest fears, desires and prejudices. If all this sounds a little heavier than a typical romantic tale, trust me: despite the serious look at sexual stereotyping and prejudice, "Devils" is first and foremost a clever and entertaining story. Much like Monica herself, it's both sexy and funny, and sometimes just downright wicked.

ROCFanKat has written some fantastic dialogue, including a few hilariously lethal exchanges between Devvy and her best friend, Cassie Wolfe. Written in the first person from Devvy's point of view, "Several Devils" is also a wonderful technical example of how to advance both plot and character development through dialogue rather than omnipotent narration. As readers, we are not so much "told" this story, we simply experience it. (Followed by the sequel, "The Average of Deviance," unfinished, Parts 1-16 available.)

Shaken by KG MacGregor

It’s always fascinating to see the many different ways in which “uber” authors get their characters together. The mechanisms are as varied as the stories, obviously. They may meet on a street corner, at a store, in a cab, or some other ordinary place. Or they may meet under less-than-pleasant circumstances: because of a death, an accident, a crime, an investigation, or something similar. To me, it’s an interesting question: How and where do we meet the important people in our lives? And it’s always fun to run into something a little different.

The mechanism in KG MacGregor’s “Shaken” is an earthquake. But that’s not what I find so neat about this story. Sure, earthquakes aren’t the usual means by which people meet their future lovers (thank goodness). It’s actually how MacGregor uses the earthquake that I liked so well, because it was so different from what I was expecting. Having gone into the story knowing that it was about two people meeting because of an earthquake, I was rather prepared for something along the lines of a standard disaster flick - Part One: introduction of the characters leading normal lives, Part Two: unexpected disaster (fire, flood, tornado, earthquake, volcano, plane crash, terrorist attack), Part Three: the battle for survival (where characters meet [each other, their respective fates and challenges, etc.]), Part Four: resolution, success, failure, discovery, with, generally, a happy (or sometimes bittersweet) ending for the survivors, ostensibly with our heroines going off to live together like Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton at the end of Dante’s Peak.

Certainly, “Shaken” follows an abbreviated version of this pattern in the beginning. Anna and Lily are both caught in the same mall during an earthquake. Portions of the mall collapse. They fight for survival. They save each other. They’re rescued… and so much for expectations. At this point MacGregor tosses the disaster script and trades it in for a good romance instead. The earthquake, it turns out, isn’t the central theme of the story at all, as the title might seem to imply. Oh, Anna and Lily are “shaken” all right. But not just by the earthquake. After all, if it took an earthquake to get these two together, you don’t really expect the rest of the their story to be smooth sailing, do you? MacGregor does not disappoint.

“Shaken” is well written and entertaining. I liked both characters, and their dialogue is quite witty at times:

"God, I could sleep for a week!" Lily flopped down into the pile of lace and satin lining the crevasse that bisected the store. Racks of wedding gowns had rolled into the gaping hole and toppled, layering the earth which had broken through the store floor with a strange blanket of plush cloth.
"Maybe we should stop and rest few hours," Anna suggested casually, falling beside her savior.
"As tempting as that sounds, I’m worried about the aftershocks. The ceiling dropped during the last one, and the next one could finish the job. If that happens, I’d realize my worst fear."
"What’s that? Being buried alive?"
"No, being caught dead in a bridal shop," Lily deadpanned.

I laughed out loud more than once, and I was delighted when MacGregor posted two sequels, “Stirred” and “Strained.” These two are also worth reading!

Charmer gives us an ending to the IDES OF MARCH that has some very intriguing consequences. I hesitate to give away too much because it's a real joy to try and figure out what the hell's going on in that first scene! Why the heck are Gabrielle and Callisto so chummy? And why does Callisto seem... well... likeable? All I can reveal is that Gabrielle finds herself unable to sleep due to some vivid, intense dreaming and she's desperate for some answers. Within moments, you'll find yourself plunged into a world that is both heart-breaking and thought provoking.

This little treasure is unlike anything else I've read of Charmer's. Unlike the humor and sexiness of her past stories (of which I'm a big fan), this is a thoughtful, poignant piece. It hits all the right notes and then some. Truly, it's been some time since I've enjoyed a classic XWP short story as much as I did this one.

Like many romantics, I am a sucker for what is the in the movies termed a 'meet cute'. Those sequences where two people we know are destined to be together, collide with sparks. I far prefer dazzling insults over breathless love at first sight. I can be reading an uber that has intelligence and beautiful imagery, but if the protagonists never arguing and always trust and agree with each other, I feel lost in a make believe world that is neither entertaining nor appealing. So I like K Simpson generally and this short piece in particular. It’s the story of Cassandra’s first day at work, and her first meeting with Devlin as remembered by the two of them in alternating sections. There isn’t all that much of a conflict between the differing variations of their stories, but it’s the competitive wit of both women and the author that makes this a delight, a laugh and a pleasure to recommend.

Skin Tight by Juxian Tang
Recommended by: LadyKate - 02.17.02
Classification: Classic X & G; Xena/Ares pairing and implied ALT
Sex/Violence Content: Alt/NC-17
Length: Short Story - Complete

Juxian Tang is not really a Xenaverse bard -- only a few of her many stories are based on "Xena: Warrior Princess" -- but she just happens to be one of the most gifted and extraordinary fan fiction writers in any fandom.

"Skin Tight" exemplifies Juxian's writing at its best: her amazing ability to weave together dark, disturbing, violent themes with an exquisitely lyrical, poignant tenderness, and her superb style that vividly captures images, sensations, and emotions.

Here, the premise of the Season 6 comedy "Old Ares Had a Farm" -- the mortal Ares is being hunted by warlords with grudges against the ex-God of War, and Xena hides him on her grandparents' old farm -- is reshaped into a completely original story that is anything but comical. In this version, Ares does get captured by a crafty old enemy (who, in a nice touch, is not just a warlord of the week but someone with a connection to an earlier X:WP episode), and Xena and Gabrielle fall into the trap as well. They get out -- but not before Ares is brutally abused on the warlord's orders. Badly injured, he has to stay on the farm until he recovers, and Xena finds herself having to grapple with her complicated feelings toward her former adversary.

Juxian's rich, evocative writing captivates from the opening lines, in which Xena is having a nightmare about being hunted in Chin long ago:

"She remembered pain the best. It returned undeniably real -- mind-numbing, tormenting ache in badly knitted bones -- not just settling there but rising all through her body, resounding even in her teeth at every jerking step she managed. ...

She knew it was hatred that made her move - perhaps the last thread that linked her to consciousness. Sometimes this hatred seemed to her a huge ball of blackness growing inside her head -- one that encompassed everything and everyone in the world."

Juxian refers to "the unbearable clarity of perception" in Xena's dream, and this phrase aptly sums up her own style. In the warlord's dungeon, "the bars of the cell were almost as thick as [Xena's] wrist -- moist and unperturbed as she tried to shake them." The violence inflicted on Ares happens "off-camera," but the scene in which Xena and Gabrielle huddle in their cell in a silence periodically punctuated by his screams is nonetheless harrowing. In the second half of the story, which takes place on the farm, the imagery is as poetic as it is harsh in the first half. (My one stylistic quibble is with the occasional references to Gabrielle as "Gabby.")

One may disagree with a few aspects of Juxian's characterization of Xena (particularly when she tells herself that she has no obligation to help Ares -- even as a psychological defense mechanism, that doesn't quite jibe with what we saw on the show in Season 6). For the most part, however, it is not only spot-on but profoundly affecting. The Warrior Princess in this story is a woman far more comfortable with action than with feelings, and guarded toward other people except for Gabrielle -- yet deeply vulnerable and loving underneath the stoical exterior.

Gabrielle in "Skin Tight" recedes somewhat into the background, but her good-humored warmth and her empathy still shine through. With a few sparse brushtrokes, Juxian paints a moving and engaging portrait of Ares, "softened" by mortality and trauma without losing the edge that makes him ... well, Ares. The former War God's newfound humanity is captured in a sweet (yet never mushy) scene in which Xena finds him feeding bits of apple to a hedgehog and recalls that she used to bring hedgehogs in from the forest when she was a little girl:

"'I didn't,' he said suddenly.

'You what?'

'Didn't have hedgehogs. Stallions, serpents, wolves -- but no hedgehogs.'

'Don't tell me you missed them,' she said but it felt strange for her -- to think about him being a child; it must've been such a long time ago that one might've forgotten about it himself. But no, he remembered.

'Nope.' There were the little wrinkles around his eyes as he smiled at her. 'But it might've been fun if I had them.'"

At the end of "Skin Tight," Juxian brings Xena and Ares together; but she is fully aware of the dark, troubling underside of their relationship and never turns it into a lovey-dovey romance. "It was not right that he could feel so good despite what he was," Xena thinks as Ares touches her face. "But, maybe, she could forget what he was. Maybe, he could forget it."

The Xena/Ares pairing may be relatively unorthodox in Xena fan fiction, but ultimately the themes of this story are classic Xena themes: the ability to survive and transcend darkness and horrific violence, to overcome hate and mistrust, and to find healing and redemption in an unlikely love.

Queenfor4 prefaces her story with the standard set of disclaimers, but pay attention - when she says "this being an Uberish tale, the main characters will bear a physical resemblance to [Xena and Gabrielle], but that’s as far as it goes," she really means it. The thing that really grabbed me about this story is her unique characterizations of Dr. Randi Oakes (uber X) and author Megan Galagher (uber G).

The story begins with Megan Galagher returning to NY via the scenic route from a book signing in Manchester NH. Lost in the mountains, she finds the small town of Cutters Gap just as bad weather sets in. The same threatening storm brings the reclusive Dr. Randi Oakes into town to get supplies, where, naturally, the two meet. But rather than having the romantic sparks flying, Queenfor4 sets up a rather interesting relationship:

"Ms. Gallagher, I’ve read quite a few of your stories. And, while they are gripping mysteries, they all have one recurring and disturbing trend. They all feature gay and lesbian characters. And those characters are always portrayed as being sick, twisted and immoral. That is a malicious, incorrect, and inflammatory stereotype, Ms. Gallagher, and I find it offensive."

Megan’s confusion turned to cold indifference as she stepped back from the taller woman. "I call them as I see them, Dr. Oakes. Those kind of people are an affront to society, and serve absolutely no purpose in this world. I’m sorry if my portrayals of these individuals offend you."

The two would gladly go their separate ways after this exchange, but, with a little help from the weather and Megan's continuing poor luck with directions given by the local natives, they wind up trapped in Dr. Oakes' sprawling ranch house for five weeks. Suffice to say that these two have a more than a few hurdles to overcome in coming to understand and appreciate each other.

Despite what I felt to be a slightly shaky premise for getting the two together, and despite the almost stereotypical occupations of the two leads, Queenfor4 makes this story work, and better yet, she portrays her characters in anything BUT stereotypical fashion. She's not afraid to let Megan make big, walloping mistakes (repeatedly), yet quite believably, nor is she afraid to portray the good doctor as very vulnerable, patient, and compassionate (very un-Xena like). The interaction between the two is gripping and fun to watch unfold. Throw in some believable character history to liven up the plot, some lovely hurt/comfort scenes, and some wonderful character introspection and growth, and I find this to be a story well worth the time to read.

We all have read ubers that took the easy way out. Used the soul mate bond to make an instantaneous connection, or to override the differences that comprised the ‘meet cute’. I hate that.

In Snowbound our girls are Randi and Megan, and Megan is severely homophobic, and Randi is very out. Our protagonists are brought together by coincidence and forced to remain together by circumstance, literally ‘snowbound’. But what makes the story stand out is that what separates them is never minimised, and the characters grow through their problems in a fairly realistic way. These traits are not constructed through quick and facile characteristics, and neither are the solutions.

It also helps enormously that despite the above mentioned unattractiveness, they are very appealing and the story is very well written.

An evocative tale of soulmates, of chances not taken and regretted. But above all, it's the story of two women who lock eyes on a subway, feel something shift inside themselves and know that this is it. The decision made whether to follow an impulse or not will affect the rest of their lives. And if one of those characters is already near emotional breaking point, how long will she wait for her soulmate to battle her own fears and realise that this is their one chance?

The two lovers' voices are clear, poignant and strike right at the heart. To hear Stash talking of her fears, to hear Lariel talking of giving up...this is poignant writing at its best, and is counterpointed with the most evocative choice of song lyrics.

The central image of the candle, representing the brief flickering hope of love, is strongly held through the piece and lends to the mood of half life and half hope that pervades the story. As the candle burns, the light will begin to die in these people's lives unless they grasp the flame that is flickering in and for each other.

Mel's best friend is threatened, and as they search to find out why, the Bodies are piling up. Grandma Pappas is out to throttle Janice, the new Reverend has other ideas, and Mel is the piggy in the middle. There's more fun here than a basket full of puppies.

Looking for something a little different than you've been reading? Maybe something that departs a bit from the traditional romance formula? Perhaps something a little less vanilla?

Harper McFadden, professor and poet, has little in common with Adrian Xanthakis, a tattoo artist with a penchant for rough trade. With a dark history and a take-no-prisoners attitude, Adrian has the worst reputation in town, so much so that no self-respecting dyke wants to be seen with her-though secretly they would all give their left (insert favorite body part) to sleep with her. Coming from completely different worlds, the only things they have in common are their more carnal needs. In essence, Adrian and Harper are drawn together for purely sexual reasons sans any emotional attachment. The suspense that lures the reader along in this story isn't when will they consummate but rather when will they fall in love?

Michal and Joann have written a romance walking backwards. Since sex is what brings the two characters together rather than a more orthodox set up (a shared setting or mutual dilemma), sex is no longer the end, but a means to the end. Approaching it this way is intriguing because the sexual tension is continuously satisfied, leaving the emotional connection between the two characters the thing the reader yearns for. Because the story's very foundation is built upon the desires revolving around BDSM play this won't be to everyone's taste. However, if you're feeling adventurous, the subject is treated with a welcome above-board sophistication. And if this is your cuppa tea, you'll be oh-so happy!

What? You haven't read Spider? You're kidding, right?

This was one of the first fanfic stories I ever read, oh so long ago. I remember I was but a wee thing snuggled up on the sofa, awaiting my weekly X&G fix. The teaser was over and I was mentally smiting all the commercials standing in the way of me and some good, quality episode time when I had a revelation. I thought "Gee, I wish there was more to this relationship thing than they let on it the show." Then, of course, my wish led me to the internet where glorious treasures awaited. X & G's (and their uber counterpart's through the centuries) every desire was revealed and thoroughly explored. I gobbled up all the fanfic I could find.

*Sighs wearily. Lights a cigarette and blows some smoke rings as the sax player onstage belts out a few bluesy riffs*

Yes, darling, now I'm jaded. I've read them all and then some.

But a few really exceptional stories stick with you, compel you to revisit & relive. The good ones leave you with a smile.

This one is a classic. Kamouraskan has given us a very appealing glimpse of the bard in her element, weaving a tale that may or may not conceal an ulterior motive. It's set in early season two... but Gabby is definitely not as innocent as her modest, pre-bgsb, little amazon outfit would suggest. Like I said, the good ones leave you with a smile and this is definitely one of them.

Despite a short introduction by Mel and Janice, "The Stars Fell Down" is really a classic X&G first time story -- albeit with a few twists (remember, this is Vivian Darkbloom we're talking about). Told from Gabrielle's point of view, the story is beautifully written and presented as a scroll Mel has translated for Janice's birthday. "Stars" begins with the warrior and bard taking a few days off from their travels to keep Autolycus company on his "vacation" -- or to be more exact, to keep an eye on the King of Thieves who has profitable plans for a village festival. Before their stay is over, Gabrielle instigates a bar fight, Autolycus gives the "sensitive chat," and Xena ... well, Xena is just Xena. Further information will only spoil the fun.

Anyone familiar with Darkbloom's stories knows the author can be excruciatingly funny (The Trailer Park Series is one example) and that she has also written some of the most beautiful prose out there (run, don't walk, to read her vignette "Venezia"). What makes "Stars" special is the combination of those talents: even as you laugh at Gabrielle's predicament, you can't help but be moved by the story of her love.

(The) Stoic Warrior by ArdentTly

Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt, NC-17
Length: Short Story, 14 pages - Complete

Greetin’s y'all and welcome to Ms Maggie’s parlor. We gonna gossip (just a bit) ‘bout a couple of our fa-vo-rite ladies and one of their (erotic) escapades. I'm talkin’ bout that willowy, wanton, warrior princess Xena and her nubile, neophite , in-amo-rata Gabrielle.

Whew, open the window please Sugar it's gettin’ warm in here already.

Ms ArdentTly surely does live up to her name in this sweetly seductive story of a surprised bard and her poetic princess. That's right Sugar, in this delightful offering Xena is the personification of a passionate, poetic, pursuing lover. MMMM, MMMM, MMMMMM! Ms Magnolia should be so lucky. Anyway where was I? Oh yes, there is none of that dreadful violence. This is a truly tender tale of two frustrated friends finally free to express their love with gentle passion. I do believe Ms ArdentTly has quite possibly produced the most ROMANTIC story in the Xenaverse. My, my if only.... Oh, sorry Sugar, kinda got lost there for a minute. Now you go on and read this wonderful story. Don't you fret none ‘bout Ms Magnolia. I'm gonna get me a cold shower here in a minute.

I'm so glad you dropped in. Please come by anytime. I'm usually here and I do so enjoy discussing our girls.

Bye bye now. You all be sweet. And come again soon.

Stolen Moments by Brigid Doyle

Length: Short Story, 11 pages - Complete

There are many bards who write with their hearts on the page. There are even a few who write intelligently and with great skill. One the very few that does both well at the same time is Bridget Doyle. Unlike many whose pieces produce tears by being manipulative through technique, her stories always seem far too personal to be simply about the placement of the words. At the same time there is usually depth and character to each story.

Stolen Moments is a wonderful example of this. A tear jerker by anyone’s standards, it doesn’t accomplish this by pushing buttons. In fact it seems like a very personal piece, and unlike most fanfic, I felt as if I were intruding on the writer by reading it.

The story is set in Potadaia after the 25 year deep freeze, after ‘Who’s Ghurkan?’. Gabrielle is helping Lila and Sarah pack up the old homestead and wondering how her mother dealt with her disappearance, after the long absence. In a resolution we all might wish to have with lost family members, Xena stumbles across a series of long lost and much loved letters, and Gabrielle discovers what a mother’s love is again.

Storms of War by JLynn
Recommended by: Kamouraskan - 03.04.02
Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt/PG-13
Length: Novel, 441 pages - Complete

If ever there was a story that probably should not be reviewed by me or on this site, it is this one. I was one of the beta readers for it on two lists, it was workshopped on the Bardic Circle which sponsors Blurb, and the author is the webmistress for this site. Can't get anymore incestuous than that, can you? Unfortunately for my scruples, this is a great work, as Lunacy recognised when she recently gave it that most coveted of (and recently almost unknown) distinction, a place on her Highest Recommendations page.

Storms of War may be one of the last great epics produced by the Xenaverse as we knew it, and to read its ninety seven chapters is to be reminded why these characters drew us in, and of the talent that they attracted and inspired. It begins as a small story of a stoic warrior, and her companion, a young Bard. It expands to take on a rich panorama of a city at war and under siege, with characters that hold their own with our heroes. Most amazing of all, it gets better with each chapter.

Taking place in the early seasons of the show, Storms of War is like most of the classic stories, about Xena and Gabrielle being tested on all sides. Their feelings for and loyalty towards each other, their weaknesses and strengths, all brought out in battle and mental warfare. Along the way, Jlynn brings the reader directly into contact with the sights and sounds of battle, and the emotional wear and tear of love and friendship. It requires a commitment of time due to its length, but it richly rewards every moment. The only way to sum up the story for you is to simply say, epic.

Untitled: The Story of Me by Advocate

Length: Novella, 158 pages - complete

If this story is ever made into a movie, I will be first in line to see it. Funny, funny, FUNNY! Do not read this at work, everyone will want to know why you are laughing so hard, and do not ( that is if you love your keyboard ) drink while reading it. How Advocate could write a story about anger, deceit, denial, and vengeance and keep me in stitches totally escapes me. I swear... I will never be able to look at a squirrel the same way ever again.

Randi knows she is being stalked, and she is bound and determined to find out who. When Mac comes into her life everything she believes will be stood on it's ear-- In Spades! This is a twisted Road Trip story that makes Hope and Crosby look like rank amateurs. How else could one writer combine references to Fahrvergnugen, Freddy Krugger, and Snow White. Don't ask--Just go read it.

Though I love a good romance, if you don't have Xena and Gabrielle, I demand that there also be at least some thought to the plotting, some originality in the characterizations, and a few other personalities who interestme.

Advocate has exceeded all of these requirements and placed her ladies in a wickedly humourous situation where one of our Uber Heroines is stalked by the other, and later talked into (guess which does what to whom) to take the Road Trip From Hell across America. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles should have been this funny. All this, while telling a very satisfying and realistic love story. Not as much a departure from her stories Connections and Crimson Snow, as a free fall into insanity, Advocate charms from the first paragraphs to the last. Oh, and did I mention the talking squirrels?

I enjoy long involved stories with well developed characters. Kandis Glasgow has provided a story that neatly fits the bill. Candace has been having dreams. These dreams tell her she must prepare for a journey. What Candace doesn't know is that this jouney will forever change her life and that she never had any choice about going in the first place. I strongly recomend this story for any romantics out there, complete with a beverage and hankie alert.

Strength of Vision by Brigid Doyle
Recommended by: Lariel
Classification: Classic XWP
Sex/Violence Content:Gen
Length: Complete

A young mother struggles to birth her first born, a child that lays languid in her womb. After a battle, a baby is born that is not expected to survive the night. Told from the exhausted and grief stricken mother's perspective, this is an intensely haunting story. Brigid Doyle is always at her most eloquent and sensitive best when writing about children, and in this story, she captures the pain, and loss, and hope and mystery of childbirth.

But the child is fated to survive, and her safekeeping is gifted to the mother until an other comes along to claim her. An intriguing take on Gabrielle's very first moments, and a fascinating forecast of her future role. A beautiful, evocatively written story.

Strings Attached by Inyx
Recommended by: Yernod - 10.31.99
Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Complete

Meet Kelly and Jessie, best friends and roommates, both fairly content with their lives. They have their work, their friends, their families and, most importantly, each other. The only problem, it seems, is this one small area of misunderstanding: everyone who knows them (or seems them on the street together, for that matter) assumes they're gay ... and a couple. Even their own mothers don't buy their denials, one going so far as reading books on the gay lifestyle in anticipation of her daughter's enlightenment.

So begins Inyx's promising new uber story, "Strings Attached." Funny and quirky, the story neatly twists the popular portrayal of a couple, united in love, defending their lifestyle to everyone with this portrayal of a couple, equally united and defending their lifestyle, but this time in reverse. "We're not gay!" they proclaim (not that there's anything wrong with that, of course!)

To make matters worse, or at least more interesting, Jessie's pregnant. Now if only they could convince everyone that Kelly's not the father!

Well written and shifting from both the first person (from Kelly's POV) and regular narration, Inyx has created an original and interesting setup with very likable leads. Now if only they would get a clue...

Summer's Circus by Barbara Davies
Recommended by: Laler - 01.04.99
Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content:Alt
Length: Complete

Summer Walsh, the owner of 'Summer's Circus', has a lot on her hands. Her circus is plagued by pickpockets, thieves, and the local scum trying to get protection money. So when free-lance journalist Alison Carmichael comes to do an article on the Big Top, Summer welcomes the offer of the free publicity. As Alison is shown around the circus, she is not only taken aback by the trapeze act, etcetera, she is also taken aback by Summer herself.

Set around Cheltenham, Barbara Davies does a wonderful job of illustrating the ambience of the circus and the area's countryside while developing an enjoyable story showing these two women who start to form a relationship around a circus that is struggling to survive.

Summer's Reunion by Barbara Davies
- Sequel to Summer's Circus

Recommended by: Laler - 01.13.00
Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content:Alt
Length: Novella - Complete

While Summer attends stunt school, Allison is roped into taking over the organization of her school's reunion. From the very beginning, Allison has a feeling that everything is not going to go as smoothly as promised. It's not long before she finds out that she was right. After one things leads to another, she is left with only her (and of course Summer's) imagination.

While Allison is dealing with old fears springing from her past, Summer has fears of her own to deal with when it comes to her profession and how it affects the person she loves. But each must find a way to bury their fears so they may move beyond them and continue with the life they are building together.

Yet again, we are treated to another well-written story by Barbara Davies. Presented in an entertaining way, we see a relationship that continues to grow as realistic issues are dealt with. This is a very fun and enjoyable sequel.

Summer Games or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bard by Rooks
Recommended by: Angharad Governal - 07.02.00
Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story - Complete

In the grand old tradition of beginning stories in medias res, Rooks places our warrior and bard in one very interesting situation - Xena catches Gabrielle in a very compromising position with another woman. As the bard hastens to explain (and assure) the warrior that all is not as it seems, she launches into the story of what had occurred days earlier, a story that unfolds through Rooks' clever use of flashback and narrative structure. Readers, along with one distraught warrior, are told the tale of how Xena and Gabrielle encounter the Calydonian Boar and a woman named Atalanta.

Sunne In Gold by Nene Adams
Recommended by: Angharad Governal- 02.07.00
Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Novel - complete

Set in a mythic, medieval Irish past, Sunne In Gold tells the tale of a knight, Cathelin O'Cameron - known as Blacksunne - (uber Xe) who has come home from the Crusades only to learn that her kingdom is in chaos. After driving her evil uncle away from her lands,  she discovers a very frightened and very beautiful Muslim slave, Madrigal (Uber Gab) chained in her private chambers. Taking full advantage of the historical romance novel genre made popular by Sir Walter Scott in the early 17th Century, Nene Adams' Sunne In Gold richly blends vivid (and nicely convincing) detail of the popular vision of life in medieval times with romance and adventure. A fun read.
