XWP Stories - R
Redemption by Sword'n'Quill (Susanne Beck)
Recommended by: laler - 09.27.99
Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Novel - complete
In 'The Bog', a women's correctional facility, Angel is the narrator of this story by way of her journal writings. She takes us through the everyday life, and the not-so-everyday life, occurrences behind penitentiary walls: friendships, love, gangs, sex, and murder, and not necessarily in that order. Angel seems comfortable in her forced way of living until Ice, a prisoner with a considerable reputation, enters the picture throwing Angel's prison life into a spin. Since time is on Angel's side (so to speak), she commits herself to getting beyond Ice's barriers and to the inside. If it were all that simple to do this story would play out as expected, but there are twists and turns that are sometimes shocking, sometimes amusing.
Sword'n'Quill does an exceptional job weaving all the Uber-character relationships together as events unfold. This is a novel well thought out, and worth the time that will be invested in reading it.

Regret by Extra
Recommended by: Taleweaver - 11.10.01
Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Gen
Length: Complete
In a land where Gods are cruel and winter is harsh there are two travellers. One is happy, the other believes she would be content alone. Extra has shared with us a tale of regret, longing and lessons learned with Xena and Gabrielle as the stars. It is six months after Gabrielle followed the quiet warrior from Potadeia, and in the grip of a bitter winter their fledgling friendship is unravelling. In the haven of a warm cave Xena comes to learn that being alone is wrapped in loneliness, and she reaches out in the one way that she knows will bring the bard happiness.
With Extra's words we can feel the bitter bite of the cold, the relief in the flames of the fire, and Xena's regret as she finally comes to realize just how alone she has kept herself. The early differences between Xena and Gabrielle are exquisitely drawn in "Regret". Extra seems to have a clear understanding of the former warlord*s heart and vividly paints the picture of Xena's evolution from loner to that of a friend. I would recommend this story to anyone looking to be moved by a short, but meaningful piece of fan fiction. There is no warning needed for adult situations. There are none. This story should be a classic among readers, it is Xena and Gabrielle as they were before they became close. Read this and witness the birth of friendship.

Renegade Run by Willowluvyr
Recommended by: Kamouraskan - 03.09.00
Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content: Alt/PG-13
Length: Complete
Easily one of the most prolific bards in the Xenaverse, Willowluvyr is known for the broad spectrum that is covered by her Ubers, as well as the multitude of them. Though in my opinion some of her pieces are pretty rough, in this story she has seemlessly worked her narrative style into an authentic Early American voice, which combined with realistic characters, and a multitude of true and imagined details, makes this a wonderful read.
The story is told by Mar, Warrior Eyes, a female Mountain Man who is hired to escort a group of Mormons which, of course, happens to include a spunky strawberry-blonde. Their meeting, the gradual growth of trust changing to romance, is the core of this story. But it is the details, real and invented, and the exceptional recreation of the old aboriginal and western world, that really is the star. This story is perfect for the lover of the western, of strong well defined characters, and of excellent storytelling.

Requiem by Jordan Falconer

Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Complete
Regret, loss, goodbye...the flavours of a lost soul as it stands at the edge of the world, saying its farewells to the life and the love that it once knew. This is a beautifully crafted and poignantly written story, one that will make your heart weep at the lost love that seeps from every aching memory that the narrator relives. What else can a splintered soul do, but take to the highway on a bike and run from its past, its memories, its pain?
But what happens when the journey is finally over? Jordan sets a scene for us that has us assuming we know the answer here - its obvious, the narrator is missing a lost love. Suicide seems their only option. And just when we think we have it straight, the whole premise of this story is turned upside down, and we realise how wrong we’ve been. And then it comes - the anger, the resentment...the sacrifice...of love wrenched from each others arms for the greater good.

One of the most, (and I mean one of many) moving moments of the TV Series was the prison scene of Ides Of March. The part where Xena is crippled and Gabby is holding her? To me it showed the strength and love between these two friends.
Sais story moved me with this short tale. It fills in the blanks as to what the characters were thinking when we were viewing other things.
How did the proud Warrior feel about being disabled?
How did she feel having Gabrielle protect her?
How did she feel seeing her friend take lives to save hers?
Did watching this cause her horror, sorrow, or disbelief? To know that someone could love you so much to do that?
Any story that shows how strong the Gabrielle character is, gets props in my book.
So this gets a good rating from me, the only thing I might ask is that the bard not make further references in the disclaimer. Cut down with the 'Not like that,' sort of crap. If you're straight and writing for a gay audience, leave things to the reader's imagination. Don't ruin the moment.

A strange woman is found dangling off the side of a mountain. How she got there is a mystery. When Taylor pulls the woman from certain death, she feels the need to find out more about her.
This a story about grief, love and making mistakes. Kandis Glasgow had to write this sequel, other wise people would have hunted her down and forced her to do it. And I am grateful she did.

Reversal of Destiny by Nancy

Length: Short Story, 49 pages - Complete
Of all the 'What if' pieces I've read, this is by far the most unique and entertaining. Like the title suggests, expect everything to be turned 180 degrees. A crippled healer finds a dying warrior on a battlefield. These two souls are drawn together in a way which is familiar and yet completely different. As you can tell, I don't want to give away the plot simply because the unusual circumstance of this story is the major part of its charm. Fresh and imaginative, this is an entirely new slant on Xena fan fiction.

Length: Short Story, 36 pages - Complete
Ladies and gentlemen ...we have a series. This is the second in what the author has now dubbed "The Reversal Series," and this makes me a very happy camper. Nancy continues to tell the tale of the warrior and the healer in a fresh and very believable manner. No compromise is taken with the characters of Xena and Gabrielle, they remain true to the women we love, despite the fact that they walk through this new world of Nancy's crafting.
The Healer and the Warrior aid a village that has been hit by a Warlord. They each make mistakes that so many do early in a relationship. Healer learns that the Warrior must have a place in her craft and the Warrior learns that she can't protect the Healer all of the time. This common theme is told in whole new way and yet the lesson of trust remains the same.

Length: Short Story, 9 pages - complete
This Mel and Janice/Star Wars crossover had me in stiches. The author has delightfully inserted Janice Solo as the dashing spaceship pilot sent out on a rescue mission for Princess Meleia. It's a quick sort of tale; the kind you'd tell slowly over a Scotch on the rocks, maybe a Harps, full of snooty Scorn Droopers, and that pesky farm boy Fluke. However, the result is hilarious, and I definitely say you should check it out.

Rumors of Love by Ella Quince
Recommended by: Rebecca Hall - 08.07.99
Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story - Complete
How do we reconcile the love stories of The Quest and Ulysses? Ella Quince tackles this issue in her powerful and insightful short story, Rumors of love. Xena and Gabrielle visit the Amazons after their return from Ithica, and Xena is forced to confront the difference between mere lust and true love. Quince tells the story of two women stumbling toward intimacy with gentle humor and compassion. This well crafted and passionate tale provides a realistic and insightful take on Xena's character. Quince's brilliance lies in her ability to capture complex emotion with poetical prose. For those of you who haven't had the opportunity to read this story, you are in for a rare treat.
