XWP Stories - N
(A) Narcoleptic's Guide to Romance by Vivian Darkbloom
Recommended by: Angharad Governal - 10.08.00
Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story - Complete
There are certain moments in the lives of readers, a moment where the sentiment and politics of words fall away, and all is left is clarity. It is the blindingly clear understanding of the joy and beauty of words. Moments like these are points of conversion and re-conversion. It is where, as readers, we fall in love with the possibility of language. It turns us from mere ordinary readers into lovers of words. We become enamored by the possibility of the written text. Happy in our delirium, we hope (for the first time or for the hundredth) that the sickness will be life-long and incurable.
For many of us, this incredible feeling of the magnificent possible of the world of written language -- that feeling of clarity -- comes very rarely. We read voraciously, hoping, amid the mountain of letter and sound, grammar and syntax, verb, noun, adjective, and adverb to experience that moment of unadulterated beauty once more. I, as a happy sufferer and lover of words, am pleased to announce that I have experienced that fleeting moment of beauty in the most unlikely of places -- fan fiction. And the name of that glimpse into the possible is, "A Narcoleptic's Guide to Romance" by Vivian Darkbloom.
Darkbloom's use of language has always astounded me. She is best known for her comedic writing -- the oft-praised, "White Trash / Trailer Park" series. However, it is with her more "serious" and "thought-provoking" work that highlights her immense talent for the written word. "Narcoleptic" is a bittersweet reflection of the possible, the "might haves" and "should haves" that permeate life. Readers will note that the tale is tinged with a sense of paralyzing bitterness and fear indeed, this sense of paralysis -- reflected in the title -- is manifested by its two main characters, Danny and Kate. Both characters are thoroughly complex and infuriatingly human. Their faults and foibles are laid bare on the screen for all the world to see.
The brevity of this tale, this brief glimpse into the lives of two very flawed individuals, is in part, what makes it all the more extraordinary. Readers are thrown into the midst and mindset, of the attitudes and insanity, of the world of Danny and Kate, with such a force, speed, and beauty that boggles the senses. It is catharsis -- the purging of passionate emotions through art -- at its very best.

Natural Causes by Mayt
Recommended by: Valkyrie - 05.12.02
Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Novella, 113 pages - Complete
Mayt doesn't hesitate to tackle the weightier issues in life, and in "Natural Causes" she takes on one of the biggest. How do two soulmates react when one is diagnosed with a terminal illness? In this story, Gabrielle is stricken with a mysterious sickness that saps her strength and energy. Given six months to live by a healer in Sparta, she and Xena return to the Amazon village where Gabrielle would like to spend her dying days. Mayt conducts a wonderful exploration of our heroines' reactions to this heart-rending situation, from Xena's persistent hope of finding a miracle cure and her anger at Gabrielle's apparent acceptance of her fate, to Gabrielle's despair at her failing health and her battle to die with dignity.
The tension is kept high throughout the story, as one might expect given the circumstances, and Mayt doesn't pull any punches when it comes to the emotional impact of the situation. She also doesn't let it turn into a thirty-three part exposition in mush. No, this story goes deep; it occasionally gets ugly, and it is very believable. Mayt's writing style is unique, but she establishes a rhythm with her word choice and grammar that is delightful in its brevity. She even manages to make the reader care profoundly about the supporting cast of characters. This story is a great read, and while you're at it, check out her other classic stories: "Silences," "Silences II," "The Chamber," and "Mediations." In fact, you might appreciate "Natural Causes" even more if you've read them in advance.

Negotiations by Gin
Recommended by: Kamouraskan - 04.14.01
Classification: Conqueror
Sex/Violence Content: Alt/PG-13
Length: Complete
The first site I visited on the web was Lunacy. The first author I read was Missy, and the first Conqueror story I read was this one. Over a year has passed, and my appreciation for each has not dimmed.
Gin does not follow the norm for the conqueror. There is no breaking of legs, or cringing slave girl. Gabrielle and Xena meet as near equals. Gabrielle as the Queen of the Amazons and Xena, the Rising Conqueror of the known world.
The story is complete in itself, and for those many that it will delight, it is followed by a series of books which expand this alternate Xenaverse and the characters.

XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS - APOCALYPSE
Book 1 - Nemesis by Brigit M. Morgan
Recommended by: Valkyrie - 03.02.03
Classification: XWP Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Novel length - Complete
Nero is emperor, and Rome is set to burn in this complex, marvelous post-FIN tale. There are so many twisting threads in this story that it's difficult to summarize them all with brevity, but here's my best attempt. In this story, you will find:
- Nemesis, a mysterious female assassin embarking on a killing spree
- Ares gleefully nursing a complicated plot (much to the consternation of Aphrodite)
- A world-weary Gabrielle patiently training a sidekick named Mira
- Mira gamely trying to earn her self-proclaimed title, "The Princess of Thieves."
- Eve, imprisoned and sentenced to death by crucifixion along with a host of other Elijians
- A valiant rescue attempt
- A cast of wonderfully done characters including Nero, Octavia, Virgil, and a boy named Joshua
- A painful slap, some broken ribs, a few nail-biting fights, flashbacks, premonitions, a chase scene, a couple reunions, and throughout the whole - great writing.
I enjoyed this story tremendously. The plot is gripping, the characterizations excellent. I'm not a big fan of Eve, but I liked her in this. I especially loved the glimpses we get of Gabrielle through Mira's eyes, and I am definitely looking forward to the next installment in this series.

Nipple by Archaeobard
Recommended by: Taleweaver - 07.06.03
Classification: Classic XWP
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story - 6 pages - Complete
I have read “Nipple” by Archaeobard so many times; one might think that I know it word for word. But I leave enough time between readings that it is always just as funny each time I read it.
Any bard that has company that is stuck for a word will ask their companion for assistance, and Gabrielle is no different. She has a problem with her nipples, and asking Xena for help was the logical choice. For example…
“"Oh," the bard shrugged non-committally and grinned again, "I just like the sound of the word, you know," she sat forward in her seat and leaned conspiratorially over the table, "'malleable nipples'." The bard pronounced each syllable slowly, letting the words roll languidly from her tongue in a cascade of imagery.
The warrior paused a moment while she remembered to breathe, and swallowed the lump that had somehow managed to lodge itself in her throat. "Uh-huh." was all that came out when she tried to speak.
"Oh come on Xena, it's a bard thing, listen to how it sounds." The bard repeated the two words, this time with the added imagery of rolling her thumb and forefinger over an imaginary nipple. "See, you can almost feel it." Gabrielle finished with another grin and sat back in triumph.
This is only one section of a story that should be a classic and became a series. It is only one of my favorite fan fic tales, but nothing else makes me laugh so hard, even though I know what comes next. The first time I read this, I thought I had broken a rib from laughing. While that might have hurt, I also think it would have been a grand compliment to the bard.
You must read “Nipple”. I doubt there is another story quite like it anywhere on the World Wide Web. Unless of course, it’s the rest of the series.

Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained by Tonya Muir

Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Complete
The first alternative universe story that I really liked, this one is based around that wonderful second season episode “Remember Nothing”, only this time, Xena didn’t shed blood. However, she has managed to rescue Gabrielle and this two part story deals with her efforts to rehabilitate the former slave, and to find again the best friend whom she left behind when she chose the path that the Fates had allowed her.
Both characters are drawn beautifully; we have our Xena, continually struggling against her violent nature, forced to try for a life of peace and desperate to reaffirm the relationship that she had with ‘her’ Gabrielle, yet astonished and almost reluctant to find the feelings she is having for this particular Gabrielle are very different to what she was used to. And we have Gabrielle. Just like the girl in the episode, she is fearful, subdued and subjugated; afraid to stand up for herself, mistrusting Xena’s motives, cynical and hopeless. Yet somehow, Xena manages to break through the girl’s shell, and the two begin to build a deep and trusting relationship.
It is interesting to see the switch in roles in this story; it is Gabrielle who becomes the warrior as a way of dealing with the psychological damage done to her. The girl flies into uncontrollable rages or crying fits, and can only purge them through physical exertion and violence. Xena, on the other hand, must keep to her path of peace if she is to stay with this Gabrielle, and it is the former warrior who helps Gabrielle to at last find happiness within herself.
Beautifully written, joyful and tragic by turns, this is one of the most moving pieces of fanfic I have ever read, and it still makes me cry now.
