XWP Stories - I

If Ingmar Bergman Directed A Xena Episode by Joanna Sandsmark
Recommended by: Angharad Governal - 10.05.99
Classification: Classic/Parody
Sex/Violence Content: Gen
Length: Script - Complete

What do you get when you take our beloved heroic duo, Ingmar Bergman's classic flick, "The Seventh Seal" (a personal fav), and "fun with subtitles" Monty Python (another fav) esque humor? You get this unusual, but effective, and incredibly funny parody of XWP eps, as well as Bergman's famous black and white classic. If you've ever wondered why Death (or Deth) is always portrayed sporting a Swedish accent, or had a sneaking suspicion about the accuracy (or inaccuracy) of subtitles, this little tale, written in the form of a film script, will confirm and answer those nagging questions.

I Found My Heart in San Francisco - Book 11 "Karma" by SX Meagher

I devoured this book in a matter of hours, much to the constant glares of my girlfriend, who I continuously neglect in order to find you all the gems in the Fan Fic world. The things I go through for the readers...

Fate has it's hand in all the lives of the characters in SX Meagher's successful "I Found My Heart in San Francisco" series, and Book 11, "Karma" is yet another example of fine writing, of which the author is in a class all her own.The continuing adventures of Ryan O'Flaherty, her partner Jamie Evans, and a cast of parents, siblings, cousins and friends combine to make this installment literally, one hell of a ride. Ryan finds that playing sports isn't always fun, while Jamie deals with trouble between her parents. Love blossoms between old friends, while others are afraid to admit their true feelings towards one another. Will Ryan sacrifice all, for a chance at a long forgotten dream? How will Jamie be able to balance school, golf, and a relationship?? And lastly, I guarantee the finale of this installment will have you on the edge of your seat. Reading anything that SX puts out makes me aware that I have been witness to greatness, to something that comes along but once in a lifetime. The words, images, flow movie-like into your consciousness, and I have found myself affected by them long after "The End." There is enough going on in this book to curb your appetite until Book 12, of which I know I can hardly wait. So I suggest you get comfy, and have a truly mesmerizing read with "Karma."

In The Kingdom Of Horses by Mary Morgan
Recommended by: Kamouraskan - 11.22.00
Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Gen
Length: Short Story, 40 pages - Complete

When one of your favorite authors stops writing there is always a sense of loss. When they return after an absence of over a year with a new epic, it’s time to celebrate.

The author of such brilliant works as Mortal Trade, The Judgment of the Gods, and the perfect short story After the Volcano, Mary’s forte has always been imaginative creations that highlight the bond and relationship between the Bard and Warrior. This story does exactly that. Though there is no explicit sex, and the story might be considered Gen, their commitment to each other could not be stronger.

Set in other mythical kingdom once taken by the Destroyer of Nations, Xena is asked to play a dark role in the upcoming transfer of power, the details of which he is sworn not to reveal to her inquisitive and worried Bard. Gabrielle soon realizes that nothing is as it seems, and that Xena’s life and soul are in the balance.

The story is possibly handicapped by a somewhat slow opening, and by a narrative style different from her usual work. This is not a fanfic bonbon to be scanned. It is one to be read slowly so that the rhythm of the prose carries you with it.

The story is rich in detail. She combines the actual character of Hesiod (circa 720 B.C.) with a mystery, a supernatural backdrop and an hidden curse, and moves them with some spectacular sequences and brilliant dialogue. The exploration of the minds and hearts of Gabrielle and Xena, their fears and obligations to the greater good and each other, is discerning and moving.

Intimacies by Lela Kaunitz
Recommended by: Ms Magnolia - 05.19.02
Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story, 2 pages - Complete

Good Mornin, all! Let me share this other story by Ms Lela. It is also a Xena and Gabrielle tale. The time line settin’ is between "Intimate Stranger" and "Ten Little Warlords." You know, when Xena was trapped in that viscous vixen Callisto's body?

Again, Ms Lela has perfectly portrayed our girls as they were durin’ that time in their relationship. Gabrielle so confused, losing the only man she had ever loved and the irony of the only woman she ever loved bein’ trapped inside the body of his murderer. And poor Xena who wants so very much to comfort her treasured bard but any attempt at vocal or physical contact only makes matters worse.

Really makes Ms Maggie wonder just how much the love we have for one another is based on physical attributes. Course it also makes Ms Maggie wonder how much those physical attributes help shape the person we are.

The angst in this one is felt deeply by both our girls. Oh, and Ms Lela is one of those bards who likes to leave their readers wantin’ more. So be warned, she's left the door open to sequels if she so desires. Oh yes, and the violence and hint of subtext are so minimal they're not even worth mentionin’.

Ms Maggie has bent Y'alls ears long enough. Y'all go on over and read this one. Please let Ms Lela know how y'all liked her story. MaryD has her address. Y'all go on and I'll let her know y'all are comin’. Thanks ever so much for droppin’ in to see Ms Maggie. Please drop in again soon. I do so love to discuss our girls. Bye now. Y'all be sweet.

Is There A Doctor On The Dig? by Bat Morda
Recommended by: Penumbra - 02.06.00
Classification: Mel & Janice
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Complete

Despite my general lack of interest in Mel & Janice novels, Bat Morda's got a thing going on. This Uber classic, written waaaay back in 1997, is really a must read for any Uberite.

Picking up where the episode The Xena Scrolls left us, the story sees our intrepid, butchy archaeologist Janice Convington pair up with Mel Pappas, the seemingly fragile southern belle with fire in her veins (well, hey, she's Xena's descendant). Xena's and Gabrielle's legacy is in danger of being auctioned off to the four corners of the world and thus the dynamic duo whisk themselves off to great adventures as they try to save the scrolls and other Xena paraphenalia on sale.

I read this story ages ago, even before I saw the episode that spawned the characters, and thus it was my first foray into the world of Uber. And what great, rollicky fun it is! The dialogue is superb, with witticism I greatly envy, and of course the story has the only dog I tolerate in fan fic -- Argo.

OK. If I don't have you convinced yet, picture this: Mel Pappas in a tux. 'Nuff said.

It All Began with a Trout by Alexiares

Length: Short Story, 49 pages - complete

Before you read this one make sure you have a good secure hold on your funny bone!

"It All Began with a Trout" by Alexiares is not your typical X&G romp, not by a long shot. Thraso is a weapons master from a distant tribe of Amazons who literally bumps into Xena and Gabrielle with hilarious results. The ending is a little blurry but hopefully this means that we can look forward to more mayhem and "Slap your neighbor".

It’s A Beautiful Life or How Xena Got Her Groove Back by Brulee
Recommended by:
Ann Braxton - 12.31.02
Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story, 40 Pages - Complete

On this last day of the year 2002 I offer a toast to the proprietor of that wondrous establishment, The Celestial Buffet. Brulee, this latest addition to your menu of entertaining and thoughtful entrees takes the proverbial cake. (OK. Enough)

To savor It’s a Beautiful Life is to recapture many of the good feelings inspired by early Xena and Gabrielle. As for the subtitle, How Xena Got Her Groove Back, well, the story is groovy. Especially the dialogue that is sprightly, clever, and instrumental in moving the story along at a good clip. Ditto Xena’s first-person narrative.

The sub genre stories of the XWP postFIN genre are, as I see it, the sad kind (XWP stays dead and Gabrielle goes on without her, may meet up with another lover, stay by herself, or meet Eve and go on from there); the happy kind wherein XWP returns by various imaginative ways, including reincarnation); and the parody kind which are laugh out loud happy too (love ‘em all).

This story expands the sub genre to include sci fi ala Bab 5 or Star Trek. The strange locale where we first find Xena is a kind of never neverland. Her companion is a “fuzzy, brightly colored pixie with no feet.”

Although Xena was noncorporeal she was still mental so she takes stock of what her life was like and is prepared to do whatever is required in this place. She becomes impatient to DO something, in the process upsetting pixie girl who squeaks: “Do?” “Yes, do”, says Xena. The sprite then tells Xena it’s better she stays put while her case is being processed because’...”I wouldn’t want to lose you. She smiled and giggled a bit.” Later she tells Xena that her data samples seemed “to have been corrupted” because of “an over abundance of extranormal wave activity”. That’s the kind of language we come to expect from glowing pixie. We learn that it was Xena’s experiences with the Olympians that messed with her data samples. A word about this character:

Glowing fuzzy pixie is an earnest and infatuated- with- Xena entity placed in the unfamiliar position of processing this newcomer to the realm of souls. Alerted to the fact that Xena’s energy mass was misdirected, she must find how to remedy this deviation. She’s an adorable entity because of her pixieish behavior and her unrelenting efforts to get Xena to where she recognizes Xena really belongs. At this point she needs to get the advice of her “caseload supervisor”.

So Xena meets her erstwhile mentor Lao Ma (actually a bundle of energy) who eventually enlists Xena as her Real Warrior Princess and gives her a special sword. She sternly reminds Xena that although she kept the name she never really earned it. One of the big shots in this land, Lao Ma knew something bad was afoot. Some guy, the one who misdirected Xena’s data samples, was playing around with a black hole for his nefarious scheme so Xena was needed to reenter Planet Earth in order to stop Gabrielle’s army.

Gabrielle’s army? Heh. Yes. Gabrielle, the Merciful Blade, became a conqueror beloved by all the people because she managed to stop the warring factions and unite them in one army for the greater good. Her further plans were what caused consternation in the land of souls because of the machinations of the bad character mentioned above. As for the Reunion...you have to read to learn about that. I'll just say Gab's pal 'Dite played a significant role in that.

Xena’s time of reentry is fortuitous as she lands in the midst of a battle and saves Gabrielle’s life. A little later, Xena sees a body fall from the sky into a lake and it is.....pixie girl except she is now corporeal and is called Enid. She was sent by Lao Ma to give Xena further instructions and to neutralize a disruptive force.

From beginning to end, Brulee holds your attention because of her artful use of dialogue to move the story along and entertain. Dialogue that can have you in stitches or rubbing your head to figure out what something means. (Xena herself asks for translations from time to time). But it’s fun nevertheless.
...because you can’t help loving that cute fuzzy pixie. She is more than cute; she’s earnest, very serious about her responsibility and very infatuated with Xena (oops, Xena’s fem...that’s... fine energy mass:)
...because the narrative flows smoothly as Xena tells her intriguing story. The suspense we are held in a good part of the way is gradually unraveled and there is a fine twist that is skillfully worked out and believable.

I have tried to present some of the atmosphere of the story but you really need to read Brulee’s words. It’s a lark to read. Especially the interaction between Xena/Pixie/Enid and Gabrielle/Xena before and after the break -through. Enjoy... as I did.

Viv's White Trash Trilogy is an outstanding piece of mind-numbing, ridiculously funny Uber parody in itself, and in this sequel to such classics as "Love and Death in the Trailer Park", our Uber-gals Zina and Gabrielle are at it again. You got it all: Gabrielle's fetish on Zima's fireman's helmet and her Avengers flashbacks; Zina's exes and the resulting happy get-together in the spirit of ice skating; a missing puppy and resulting brouhaha....

Be prepared. Don't eat anything and especially don't consume Miller Lite while reading this baby here.

In one of the dimensions of the land of Uber, there is an ancient house that sits high above a sandy beach. In this lofty abode there dwells, Creed, Helga and Jackie. One is a dog, one is a young woman, ...and one is a ghost. This unlikely trio learn to exist together under odd and sometimes funny circumstances.

I loved everything about this story, it's originality, the easy comfortable way that it is told, and the way everything is left more or less to faith. There are no big secrets laid bare, no truly violent events; rather it is the tale of a redemption without all the usual trappings, although no less heroic.

A light, enjoyable tale that left me, entertained and satisfied.
