XWP Bards - S

The Rest is Silence by Sais2Cool
Recommended by: LadyKate - 02.17.02
Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Xena/Ares pairing, implied Alt
Length: Short Story - Complete

One of the most, (and I mean one of many) moving moments of the TV Series was the prison scene of Ides Of March. The part where Xena is crippled and Gabby is holding her? To me it showed the strength and love between these two friends.

Sais story moved me with this short tale. It fills in the blanks as to what the characters were thinking when we were viewing other things.

How did the proud Warrior feel about being disabled?
How did she feel having Gabrielle protect her?
How did she feel seeing her friend take lives to save hers?
Did watching this cause her horror, sorrow, or disbelief? To know that someone could love you so much to do that?

Any story that shows how strong the Gabrielle character is, gets props in my book.

So this gets a good rating from me, the only thing I might ask is that the bard not make further references in the disclaimer. Cut down with the 'Not like that,' sort of crap. If you're straight and writing for a gay audience, leave things to the reader's imagination. Don't ruin the moment.

If Ingmar Bergman Directed A Xena Episode by Joanna Sandsmark
Recommended by: Angharad Governal - 10.05.99
Classification: Classic/Parody
Sex/Violence Content: Gen
Length: Script - Complete

What do you get when you take our beloved heroic duo, Ingmar Bergman's classic flick, "The Seventh Seal" (a personal fav), and "fun with subtitles" Monty Python (another fav) esque humor? You get this unusual, but effective, and incredibly funny parody of XWP eps, as well as Bergman's famous black and white classic. If you've ever wondered why Death (or Deth) is always portrayed sporting a Swedish accent, or had a sneaking suspicion about the accuracy (or inaccuracy) of subtitles, this little tale, written in the form of a film script, will confirm and answer those nagging questions.

(The) Speed Of The Beat Of My Heart by Michal Salat and Joann Muscolo
Recommended by: Anima - 08.10.99
Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content: Alt/NC-17
Length: Novel, 449 pages (ch 130) - Incomplete

Looking for something a little different than you've been reading? Maybe something that departs a bit from the traditional romance formula? Perhaps something a little less vanilla?

Harper McFadden, professor and poet, has little in common with Adrian Xanthakis, a tattoo artist with a penchant for rough trade. With a dark history and a take-no-prisoners attitude, Adrian has the worst reputation in town, so much so that no self-respecting dyke wants to be seen with her-though secretly they would all give their left (insert favorite body part) to sleep with her. Coming from completely different worlds, the only things they have in common are their more carnal needs. In essence, Adrian and Harper are drawn together for purely sexual reasons sans any emotional attachment. The suspense that lures the reader along in this story isn't when will they consummate but rather when will they fall in love?

Michal and Joann have written a romance walking backwards. Since sex is what brings the two characters together rather than a more orthodox set up (a shared setting or mutual dilemma), sex is no longer the end, but a means to the end. Approaching it this way is intriguing because the sexual tension is continuously satisfied, leaving the emotional connection between the two characters the thing the reader yearns for. Because the story's very foundation is built upon the desires revolving around BDSM play this won't be to everyone's taste. However, if you're feeling adventurous, the subject is treated with a welcome above-board sophistication. And if this is your cuppa tea, you'll be oh-so happy!

I realize that this style of fiction is not for everyone but since it's so beautifully written take a peek with an open mind. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

"The Speed of the Beat of My heart" By Michal Salat & Joann Muscolo, brings together two people who couldn't be more different if they tried; the delightful part is when they start to discover startling similarities they didn't know existed.

Warning: Not recommended for reading at work or while visiting Grandma.

This fantastic story is about two women, Charlene Sudsbury and Morrisey Hawthorne, who through the most horrendous circumstances meet and form a tentative friendship. Sarkel's story has many unexpected twists and is highly original, with characters that just grow on you. If you are looking for an extremely well written story with a great plot, than this story is for you! Warning: Please read the disclaimers in this story as there is some mention of rape.

Keystones in Tapestry by Ambyrhawke Shadowsinger

Length: Short Story, 48 pages - Complete

Still aching from "Ides of March"? I stumbled across this very tender short story that made me feel better, I'm hoping that it will you too.

"Keystones in Tapestry" by Ambyrhawke Shadowsinger is the sharpest piece of speculation on the up coming season that I've seen so far. Explanations about how our heroes will return are very savvy to the point that this could almost be considered a spoiler. Read if you dare. I know you will enjoy it. Warning this is a two hankie tale.

This is a total contradiction of terms. So much emotion simply can't be packed into so few words. Yet it is. The economy of words that convey the life time of a friendship is what gives beauty and 'realness' to the characters to Melly and Randy.

I recommend a cup of tea (or the comfort beverage of your choice) and box of tissues when you read this one, a sad, feel-good story. Despite the relative briefness, the reader is left with a feeling of closure that denotes a truly well written short.

Crusader: Twisted and Butchered by Silent Dee
Recommended by: Lariel - 03.24.01
Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt - language warnings
Length: Complete

A lone horsewoman crests the brow of a hill, and rides recklessly into danger, intent on stopping the massacre she sees happening before her. And when she falls off her horse and knocks Gabrielle onto her ass, Xena gets really pissed: yes, it's Najara, high on Gin and ogling the bard...

Baffled by the unusual but undeniable fighting skills of the strange woman, Xena and Gabrielle join the Light and go off to fight Marrat and his slavetraders. Unfortunately, the Light in this story is a little worse for wear. Several hipflasks the worse for wear actually, and after mumbling about "fags, curries, sing-songs and last night's kebab" Najara welcomes "me new best mates" into her fold. Especially Gabrielle, whom she folds with relish. Discovering the source of Najara's "powers" - her Gin hipflask - Xena hatches the perfect plan to stop her, using the perfect bait...

Not for the delicate (it's filled with filthy language), this story is a raucous parody of "Crusader" and if you like your comedy naughty, tasteless and ripe - this one's for you. Personally, I loved it <g>

She Said She Said by K Simpson

Like many romantics, I am a sucker for what is the in the movies termed a 'meet cute'. Those sequences where two people we know are destined to be together, collide with sparks. I far prefer dazzling insults over breathless love at first sight. I can be reading an uber that has intelligence and beautiful imagery, but if the protagonists never arguing and always trust and agree with each other, I feel lost in a make believe world that is neither entertaining nor appealing. So I like K Simpson generally and this short piece in particular. It’s the story of Cassandra’s first day at work, and her first meeting with Devlin as remembered by the two of them in alternating sections. There isn’t all that much of a conflict between the differing variations of their stories, but it’s the competitive wit of both women and the author that makes this a delight, a laugh and a pleasure to recommend.

Of Drag Kings and a Warrior Princess by Susan Smith (Smitty)
Recommended by: Anima - 08.07.99
Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Novel - Complete

When Rosalind Olchawski is set up on a blind date that takes her to a drag night at a trendy local gay bar, the last thing she expects is to ditch her boring blind date for the handsome drag king performing that night. Taryn and Ros enter each other's lives and re-create each other's world. But the enigmatic Rhea turns out to be a piece of the puzzle that must be solved in order for them to find enduring happiness.

Prose that has moments when it reads like poetry, Smitty remains true to the back-story of XWP, which is sure to please Uber fans. At the same time, she creates something totally original that is compelling reading in or out of the ff realm. This is a book I would pick up off the shelf of my local bookstore for the drag king aspect alone.

Bargain Hunting by Della Street

Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story - Complete

Fans with a wry sense of humor will enjoy Bargain Hunting. This tale is timeless and contains the infamous Xena and Gabrielle character banter. Della's characterizations of the Warrior Princess and her chatty companion are right on and guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. Her writing style makes you feel as if you are actually witnessing the events unfold. This fast paced story reminds you of the trust, friendship, caring and loving nature built during the first two seasons of the show. You haven't lived till you've "shopped" with the warrior princess. Just don't make her mad and be sure the product is in good shape and attractively packaged. Most of all, keep a tight hold on your coin purse.

(The) Pappas Journals by Elaine Sutherland
Recommended by: Penumbra - 08.21.99
Classification: Mel & Janice
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Novella - Complete

In the time-honoured tradition of tales in diary form (began, I believe, by Wilkie Collins and proliferated by such diverse authors as Bram Stoker and Iain M. Banks), this tale is set right after the episode "The Xena Scrolls". It covers a period of a few months amidst the turmoils of World War II, as Mel and Janice take refugee in Athens, deciphering the scrolls while the ebb and tide of the Nazi threat creates great uncertainty around them. The parallels of the adventures depicted in the scrolls are echoed in their everyday life, and like Xena nd Gabrielle, the two refugees travel new avenues in their relationship.

In addition to the finely depicted, gradual warming of Mel's and Janice's relationship, this piece of fiction stands out as an excellent piece of literature that only gets better in the sequel. I'm not a great friend of the Mel/Janice scheme, but this story is an exception.

(The) Pappas Journals II: In the Reich by Elaine Sutherland
Recommended by: Penumbra - 08.21.99
Classification: Mel & Janice
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Novella - Complete

If there is one story in the Xenaverse that managed to get me unsettled and almost to tears, it's this one. Entrenched by a storyline that's both exciting and moving, the core of this great piece of fiction is the way words, wisdom and love can offer unlimited, unending hope, said and done in a fine fashion. Angst is not really my thing but this tale kept me hooked, tissues and all.

The story begins where "The Pappas Journals" left off, with Mel and Janice still in Greece. The Gabrielle effect kicks into action and the dynamic duo gets involved in the war. When Mel is captured and Janice becomes privy to a dangerous secret, the world around them teeming with the cruelty and genocide of the Nazi and the horror of war's remorseless nature, all they can do is to try to survive and hope for a better tomorrow.

Redemption by Sword'n'Quill (Susanne Beck)
Recommended by: laler - 09.27.99
Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Novel - Complete

In 'The Bog', a women's correctional facility, Angel is the narrator of this story by way of her journal writings. She takes us through the everyday life, and the not-so-everyday life, occurrences behind penitentiary walls: friendships, love, gangs, sex, and murder, and not necessarily in that order. Angel seems comfortable in her forced way of living until Ice, a prisoner with a considerable reputation, enters the picture throwing Angel's prison life into a spin. Since time is on Angel's side (so to speak), she commits herself to getting beyond Ice's barriers and to the inside. If it were all that simple to do this story would play out as expected, but there are twists and turns that are sometimes shocking, sometimes amusing.

Sword'n'Quill does an exceptional job weaving all the Uber-character relationships together as events unfold. This is a novel well thought out, and worth the time that will be invested in reading it.
