XWP Bards - P
Searching for Swollen Buds by Pallas
Recommended by: Ogami - 09.29.99
Classification: Classic - Callisto
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story - Complete
While there are a lot of Callisto stories out there, few of them make you laugh. This one will, in spades. Set vaguely in the second season, this story has Callisto finding Gabrielle in the marketplace. Rather than taking vengeance, Callisto decides to be far crueler, and helps Gabrielle shop. The resulting chaos, as well as a showdown between Xena and Callisto (over Gabrielle, of course), is a delight to read. This is one of those stories that will have you dreaming it was an episode!

(A) Woman Called Alika by M. Parnell
Recommended by: Angharad Governal - 07.21.99
Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Complete
As the story opens, we find the warrior and bard at a crossroads between fording a river or passing through a lush valley. Gabrielle suggests that the duo take the valley route, but Xena immediately objects, although the river route will add two days to their journey. The bard questions this decision, and our dark warrior offers a mysterious answer - the valley route will take them to an area called, "The Vale". It is a place of mysterious customs, Xena explains, and insists to Gabrielle that it is best to be avoided at all costs. Filled with intriguing characters and a great plot that, at times, has shades of The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, this wonderful story will leave you in stunned silence. If you've read
this piece before, please go and re-discover it again, and if you've never laid eyes on it, run, don't walk, to, A Woman Called Alika by M. Parnell. It is a great read.

Occam's Razor by Penumbra
Recommended by: Anima - 08.07.99
Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story - Complete
This fine piece follows the characters in Penumbra's KINK SERIES. Ghis finds herself ruminating about recent events (an unconventional marriage ceremony of sorts) and mulling over the why of it all. It's a moment of reflection that's filled with sensory imagery that's hard to shake long after you've put the story down. Most striking is the constant, and vivid, gentleness within the dynamics of this relationship, that when juxtaposed with the painful ritual invoked in their joining, creates an almost poetic dichotomy. How does this happen, you wonder? Well, as Ghis learns through her own pondering, perhaps it's not important to understand, or to know why it all works so seamlessly . It just does.

Biker Babe From Hell by Pinfeather
Recommended by: Jaden - 11.10.01
Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Complete
This Halloween yarn is told in verse form, and the end result is original and entertaining. Told in first person, it is easy to imagine this being told over a fire, candy corn and chocolate long gone, about an encounter with the legendary and fearsome Biker Babe From Hell. I found it to be a great read, and I suggest you have a look.
