XWP Bards - K

Song Of The Candle by Kamouraskan
Recommended by: Lariel - 05.29.01
Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story - Complete

An evocative tale of soulmates, of chances not taken and regretted. But above all, it's the story of two women who lock eyes on a subway, feel something shift inside themselves and know that this is it. The decision made whether to follow an impulse or not will affect the rest of their lives. And if one of those characters is already near emotional breaking point, how long will she wait for her soulmate to battle her own fears and realise that this is their one chance?

The two lovers' voices are clear, poignant and strike right at the heart. To hear Stash talking of her fears, to hear Lariel talking of giving up...this is poignant writing at its best, and is counterpointed with the most evocative choice of song lyrics.

The central image of the candle, representing the brief flickering hope of love, is strongly held through the piece and lends to the mood of half life and half hope that pervades the story. As the candle burns, the light will begin to die in these people's lives unless they grasp the flame that is flickering in and for each other.

In New York there is a funny little shop filled with unique things that is run by a odd old lady. A stranger rolls up to her door one day with an item more unusual than anything in her shop ...and a proposition.

I loved this sweet tale of how the best things 'are' really worth waiting for. For those of you who don't have time for the multi page epics, this is a short story that sweeps over the centuries and leaves lots of room for the future. Go ahead, read it, your heart will be richer for it.

What? You haven't read Spider? You're kidding, right?

This was one of the first fanfic stories I ever read, oh so long ago. I remember I was but a wee thing snuggled up on the sofa, awaiting my weekly X&G fix. The teaser was over and I was mentally smiting all the commercials standing in the way of me and some good, quality episode time when I had a revelation. I thought "Gee, I wish there was more to this relationship thing than they let on it the show." Then, of course, my wish led me to the internet where glorious treasures awaited. X & G's (and their uber counterpart's through the centuries) every desire was revealed and thoroughly explored. I gobbled up all the fanfic I could find.

*Sighs wearily. Lights a cigarette and blows some smoke rings as the sax player onstage belts out a few bluesy riffs*

Yes, darling, now I'm jaded. I've read them all and then some.

But a few really exceptional stories stick with you, compel you to revisit & relive. The good ones leave you with a smile.

This one is a classic. Kamouraskan has given us a very appealing glimpse of the bard in her element, weaving a tale that may or may not conceal an ulterior motive. It's set in early season two... but Gabby is definitely not as innocent as her modest, pre-bgsb, little amazon outfit would suggest. Like I said, the good ones leave you with a smile and this is definitely one of them.

At Charon's Dock by kate

Length: Novella - Complete

Well, this was a real treat. One of the best treatments of classic Xena and Gabrielle I've come across in some time.

The story picks up at the funeral pyre scene in MATERNAL INSTINCTS and gives us an alternate story line, bypassing the infamous Gab drag and THE BITTER SUITE all together. Instead, Gabrielle makes that dramatic walk, in the opposite direction of Xena, and keeps on walking. Despondent over the deaths of their children and feeling responsible for Solon's death, the bard makes a deal that changes her and Xena's fate.....forever?

Written in a realistic tone, even though part of it takes place in the surreal setting of Charon's Dock, it has a gritty feel that makes the characters flesh and bone. It's appropriately, and honestly, dark at times but never relinquishes the deep love between the two characters. I hate to give too much away but I need to say how much I adored the use of the dead hearing another's loving thoughts of them-it has always been a simply breathtaking notion, and here it is beautifully executed.

Dark Promise by Katrina and Sharon Bowers

Part of Katrina's Blood and Roses realm (which explores the notion of Gabrielle as Bacchus' Daughter and Xena as Ares' Daughter), Dark Promise is a fun treat for fans of both XWP and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It is a typical day in Sunnydale (well, as typical as you can get at the edge of Hellmouth anyway,) and a mysterious blue eyed stranger (three guesses) arrives in a limo searching for Willow, Buffy's best friend and computer hacker extraordinare.  From there, things get very interesting for the Scooby Doo Gang, as well as for our Immortal Warrior and Bard. A fun read.

Intimacies by Lela Kaunitz

Length: Short Story, 2 pages - Complete

Good Mornin, all! Let me share this other story by Ms Lela. It is also a Xena and Gabrielle tale. The time line settin’ is between "Intimate Stranger" and "Ten Little Warlords." You know, when Xena was trapped in that viscous vixen Callisto's body?

Again, Ms Lela has perfectly portrayed our girls as they were durin’ that time in their relationship. Gabrielle so confused, losing the only man she had ever loved and the irony of the only woman she ever loved bein’ trapped inside the body of his murderer. And poor Xena who wants so very much to comfort her treasured bard but any attempt at vocal or physical contact only makes matters worse.

Really makes Ms Maggie wonder just how much the love we have for one another is based on physical attributes. Course it also makes Ms Maggie wonder how much those physical attributes help shape the person we are.

The angst in this one is felt deeply by both our girls. Oh, and Ms Lela is one of those bards who likes to leave their readers wantin’ more. So be warned, she's left the door open to sequels if she so desires. Oh yes, and the violence and hint of subtext are so minimal they're not even worth mentionin’.

Ms Maggie has bent Y'alls ears long enough. Y'all go on over and read this one. Please let Ms Lela know how y'all liked her story. MaryD has her address. Y'all go on and I'll let her know y'all are comin’. Thanks ever so much for droppin’ in to see Ms Maggie. Please drop in again soon. I do so love to discuss our girls. Bye now. Y'all be sweet.

Kill Shot by Lela Kaunitz

Kill Shot left me wanting more and completely satisfied at the same time. It is a thrilling and riveting read involving an assasin and her intended target. To tell more would take all the fun out of it. I enjoyed everything about this story-the writing style, the reversal of uber archetypes, the plot twists, the ending and the fact that I couldn't stop reading until I finished it.

On the surface, "Kill Shot" resembles a standard uber thriller: Corey is an embittered, emotionally vulnerable assassin, and Jill-her intended target-is a sweetly naïve bookstore manager. But before you can scream "couples therapy!" the story grabs you by the throat, courtesy of a sleek, complex (yet readily understandable and entirely believable) narrative with shifting perspectives and effective flashbacks, plot twists, great dialogue, and a writing style so tight you could bounce a dime off it-indeed, in the fanfic world, Lela's writing is the Gab's Abs (as opposed to the bee's knees). Did I just say that? Ignore me now, and go read.or else I'll put a contract out on you.

That First Night by Lela Kaunitz

Good evenin’ everyone, and welcome to Ms Maggie's parlor. Come on in and make yourselves at home. I do so love to have guests. Y'all want a Julep? Just made some fresh usin’ Daddy's recipe. Now, would y'all like to chat 'bout our girls? You know, Xena and Gabrielle?

Well, let me tell y'all 'bout this charmin’ little story that I read over at MaryD's. Lovely woman that MaryD. She's from the 'real South' ya know. Now, 'bout that story...

"That First Night" takes us back to when Gabrielle and Xena first met. Ms. Lela did an exceptional job of portrayin’ our girls in 'true' character for that time line. Gabrielle is so innocent and cheerfully undeterred. Xena is her terse and surly warlord self. Remember, Xena didn't want little Gabrielle followin’ along in the first place. Well, now it's night and a chilly one. A shivering 'bard to be' is INSISTING on curling up next to the warmest warrior she can find. Oh no, Ms Maggie is not gonna tell y'all what happens. Go on over to MaryD's and read this delightful story for yourselves. Oh, and if y'all are wonderin’, there's no violence or real subtext in this one, yet.
