XWP Bards - I

Victor, Invictus by Imagine
Recommended by: Temora - 05.12.01
Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Gen
Length: Short Story - Complete

Only the second story from this talented bard, the first half of Victor/Invictus is an insightful look into the mind and ambitions of Julius Caesar as we met him in the episode 'Destiny'. Original and startlingly vivid, this story forces us to review the events of that episode through very different eyes indeed. We are afforded a glimpse of Caesar's vision, his startling perception, and his chilling lack of empathy. Imagine is an eloquent and literary writer, and this paves the way for the second half of the tale, Xena's story. She grieves for everything that she has lost, everything she has become, and everything she lacks, both physical and spiritual, in the savage and unforgiving way that only our warrior can. Don't miss this one, it's as close to perfect as they get.

Strings Attached by Inyx
Recommended by: Yernod - 10.31.99
Classification: Uber
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Complete

Meet Kelly and Jessie, best friends and roommates, both fairly content with their lives. They have their work, their friends, their families and, most importantly, each other. The only problem, it seems, is this one small area of misunderstanding: everyone who knows them (or seems them on the street together, for that matter) assumes they're gay ... and a couple. Even their own mothers don't buy their denials, one going so far as reading books on the gay lifestyle in anticipation of her daughter's enlightenment.

So begins Inyx's promising new uber story, "Strings Attached." Funny and quirky, the story neatly twists the popular portrayal of a couple, united in love, defending their lifestyle to everyone with this portrayal of a couple, equally united and defending their lifestyle, but this time in reverse. "We're not gay!" they proclaim (not that there's anything wrong with that, of course!)

To make matters worse, or at least more interesting, Jessie's pregnant. Now if only they could convince everyone that Kelly's not the father!

Well written and shifting from both the first person (from Kelly's POV) and regular narration, Inyx has created an original and interesting setup with very likable leads. Now if only they would get a clue...
