XWP Bards - G
The Seduction Of Laura by S Anne Gardner
Recommended by: Lariel - June/July 2001
Classification: Uber(ish)
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Complete
Not your typical uber by any means - in fact, it probably doesn't even qualify as one, but it's a damn fine read nevertheless, especially if you like them dark, disturbing and psychologically taut. What starts out as a "they meet on a desert island when shipwrecked" tale soon becomes something much more, as real life forces drastic action and desperate measures to ensure that Laura and Charlie's relationship sustains. And halfway through this story, you'll suddenly realise that what you thought was a romantic love story has gone off the rails somewhere and you're reading something much different...
I can't give the plot away. But I can tell you that you'll find this story compelling, shocking and extremely disturbing. Don't read it if you like the sugar and hearts type of story, but if you like a bit more bite to your fiction, go for it.

(The) Conquest of Canaan by Anna Game-Lopata

Length: Novel, 199 pages - Complete
Set during the Canaanite rebellion, this story has the unique perspective of siding with the natives rather than the invaders of the Old Testament. The Canaanite women worship the female aspect of god, 'Asherah' and wish only live in peace; the One God has told his invading followers eradicate these idolaters. Tamar, an Israelite, has turned against her father and goes abroad to Greece in search of the fabled 'Amazons' in hopes of finding allies in her cause. On the way she meets a Warrior and a Bard who travel together.
This isn't a story about Xena, rather it is the story of three women in her life who teach her about different degrees of love; Voula, Tamar and Gabrielle. Each of these women have their reasons for having the warrior in their lives and the only common denominator is of course 'love'. It was fascinating to watch each relationship unfold; the romance being fresh and completely different in all three women.
The marvelous thing about this whole book, is the way this author has flipped history over and shown us the alternative view point that sets any childhood religious lessons on their ear. Very well written, provocative and courageous.

What can you say when you get Najara, a tied up bard, and warrior? Whoever out there thought threesome should smack themselves. What you get is a horny nut, a scared bard and a pissed off warrior. Want to make things more a mess? Add some berries that make you want to hop anything in sight Yes, the dreaded Narcis berries. The wacko tries to paint the bard, and forgets about the pissed off warrior. Well, you put two and two together.
Poor Xena wants to desperately wipe the floor with nutter-bell, but it's a little difficult with a bard moaning with that come ride me look. So sit back and enjoy the show. Najara sure as hell does, too bad she's all but with no lay.
I give this a severe THUD, holy hot mama thud! This made me want to find some berries and visit old man maytag for a spin. Good read. Now I need a cigarette.

Length: Complete
The first site I visited on the web was Lunacy. The first author I read was Missy, and the first Conqueror story I read was this one. Over a year has passed, and my appreciation for each has not dimmed.
Gin does not follow the norm for the conqueror. There is no breaking of legs, or cringing slave girl. Gabrielle and Xena meet as near equals. Gabrielle as the Queen of the Amazons and Xena, the Rising Conqueror of the known world.
The story is complete in itself, and for those many that it will delight, it is followed by a series of books which expand this alternate Xenaverse and the characters.

I enjoy long involved stories with well developed characters. Kandis Glasgow has provided a story that neatly fits the bill. Candace has been having dreams. These dreams tell her she must prepare for a journey. What Candace doesn't know is that this jouney will forever change her life and that she never had any choice about going in the first place. I strongly recomend this story for any romantics out there, complete with a beverage and hankie alert.

A strange woman is found dangling off the side of a mountain. How she got there is a mystery. When Taylor pulls the woman from certain death, she feels the need to find out more about her.
This a story about grief, love and making mistakes. Kandis Glasgow had to write this sequel, other wise people would have hunted her down and forced her to do it. And I am grateful she did.

Constancy by Xena’s Little Bitch (aka Julia Noel Goldman)

Length: Short Story - Complete
In this sensual tale set near the end of the Norse Trilogy, Gabrielle is still asleep and waiting for her soulmate to release her from her spell. During this time, she can exercise some control over her mental driftings and thinks back to when she first started traveling with the Warrior Princess.
"Sometimes I like to think that if things had happened differently between Xena and myself in all sorts of ways, it would have created a different life for us. If we had made different choices, been slightly different people. So sometimes I play over scenes from our journeys and change them in ways I think would later improve our life, spare us at least a modicum of pain. It's not always who you kill and don’t kill; it’s sometimes who you kiss that changes your fate."
When Xena does come for Gabrielle, readers are treated to a loving, heartfelt reunion between soulmates, and the opening of a new chapter for the Bard and her Warrior. Realistic dialogue, well-written, descriptive text and the author’s fluid writing style make this short story a pleasure to read.

Any simple synopsis of this story might only cheat readers looking for a well-written story along with some some romance. 'Spunky blonde researcher finds herself becoming attracted to tall dark... nun?' But this précis is not fair to the author, or to potential readers. The author has taken the time to research her locations and history to a fine degree, and the characters come alive on their own merit. The historical flashbacks are resonant and colourful, and the present day characters are original and set with their own vivid backdrop as well.
Though it seems a bit rushed at the end, it's only because the story has become so large that another novel couldn't encompass it all. Despite this, this novelette keeps the reader interested, educated and entertained from the opening disclaimers through the pageantry and countryside of the thirteeth and twenty-first century France right to its closing lines.
