Sex/Violence Content: Alt/NC-17 (some S/M)
Length: Novella, 94 pages - Complete
On one level I view Radclyffe’s Shadowland as a cautionary tale. It brings into the light a shadowy existence that when carried to the extreme can be deadly. This is the darkest of her stories I have read and previously I heeded the disclaimer and moved on. Feeling somewhat more adventurous one day I found myself pulled into this story of power, sex, drugs and evil, just as Kyle followed her subconscious drive on one fateful night. Her meeting with Dane changes her life forever.
The topic, sexual power, interested her not only for the experience but as something to understand intellectually. The author enlightens the reader as well, with her descriptions of the rituals in the Leather bar and the experience of dominance and submission. Add to that, guilt and weakness. All seems well, however, until we discover the evil influence over Dane and her dark secret. We are drawn into these emotions and feel the pain of the couple as we yearn for surcease and, yes...vengeance. Kyle learns her lessons well and takes the ultimate risk and ...well, I don’t want to give it away. Suffice it to say, Love finds a way. This is an intense, sensitively written story.
