When Ah Ladis dropped off the map of online fanfiction, she left behind some excellent work and one classic, The Burning Candle. So it was with surprise and joy that I discovered that she has reappeared as A. Hladis with a new offering. Her latest owes more to Les Liasons Dangereuse than it does to fanfic, though the backdrop may seem somewhat familiar to fans of the television show Xena. Her story takes place in a temple to Vesta, (AKA Hestia), but Vestal Virgins find that the respect and honour that they receive for their position is a very double edged sword. There is evil amidst seduction darkening their worship, and like Liasons, when justice eventually occurs, it comes with pain and/or corruption for all concerned. The author has done a fair bit of research to create her backdrop, and each of the innocents is a wonderful creation of naiveté confronting sin. An excellent tale, and one I hope represents one of many more to come
